Roy Donahue Peebles is the founder, chairman, and CEO of The Peebles Corporation, one of the largest Black-owned real estate development companies in the United States. The company’s multi-billion-dollar portfolio spans key markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, Philadelphia, Charlotte, and Washington, D.C.. The Peebles Corporation’s guiding principle is a commitment to empowering women and minorities, as highlighted by its aim to narrow the wealth gap. Peebles firmly believes that buildings and land should serve not just as structures but as catalysts for opportunity and the development of people.
Personal Life and Early Career
Roy Donahue “Don” Peebles was born in Washington, D.C., to an auto mechanic father and a secretary mother who would later become a real estate broker. Following his parents’ divorce, he moved with his mother to Detroit. However, they returned to Washington, D.C., where he would spend his most crucial and formative years. It was his mother’s foray into real estate that provided his first glimpse into the industry that would later define his career, paving the way for entrepreneurship in his mind.
Peebles’ high school years were anything but typical. He immersed himself in the political landscape of the nation’s capital, volunteering for political campaigns and serving as a page on Capitol Hill. This experience provided him with an invaluable, firsthand education in the intricate workings of government and public service. This foundation would prove crucial in his later real estate ventures, which often involved complex public-private partnerships.
A pivotal figure in Peebles’ early career was Marion Barry, the then-Mayor of Washington, D.C. Recognizing the young man’s drive and potential, Barry became a mentor to Peebles. This relationship culminated in a significant appointment when, at the age of just 24, Don Peebles was named chairman of the city’s real estate tax appeals board. This role not only deepened his understanding of property and municipal governance but also expanded his network and influence within the city.
This unique combination of political acumen and a burgeoning real estate expertise laid the groundwork for his future success. In 1987, Peebles took his first significant step as a developer, choosing the then-overlooked and underserved D.C. neighborhood of Anacostia for his inaugural project. This move was a clear precursor to what would become a hallmark of his company’s philosophy: focusing on impactful, community-oriented developments in areas with significant potential. This initial project was not just a business venture; it was a statement of intent and a foreshadowing of the transformative developments that would come to define the legacy of The Peebles Corporation.
Business
The Peebles Corporation’s project portfolio is valued at multi-billions, consisting of both luxury and affordable developments. The company specializes in large-scale real estate development through Public-Private Partnerships. Projects are selected to achieve transformative results for both the company and the local community, incorporating construction excellence, sustainable materials, historic preservation, and innovative design. Notably, the 1991 development of 2100 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE in Washington, D.C., a 100,000-square-foot office building that preserved a historic Art Deco structure, and the 2002 completion of the Royal Palm Hotel in Miami Beach, which became the nation’s first Black-owned luxury resort.
The Peebles Corporation seeks out and chooses projects with significant impact and symbolism, led by a clear goal of transforming communities that suffer from prejudice. In 1998, Peebles acquired Miami’s Bath Club after becoming the club’s first African American member just two years prior to the acquisition. This pursuit of access to opportunity and equality is at the roots of Peebles’s business sustainability and success. With an affiliate, Legacy Real Estate Development, the company has completed affordable housing projects like the 41-unit 17 Mississippi Apartments in Washington, D.C., which earned the award for “Best Small Affordable Housing Project.”
Not only a Chairman, Don Peebles is also a vocal advocate and a frequent guest commentator on CNBC, CNN, FOX News, and FOX Business Network. He is a former Chairman of the Board of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, a board member of the YMCA of Greater New York, and a former Chairman of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.
