Alexander Otto stands as one of the most influential figures in the European real estate sector, serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Hamburg-based ECE Group. Under his guidance, the company has transitioned from a family-led enterprise into a diversified international powerhouse that manages assets across retail, residential, and logistics sectors. Otto’s leadership represents his commitment to long-term sustainability and the revitalization of European inner-city ecosystems. This philosophy has secured ECE’s position as a market leader for decades.
According to Forbes, Alexander Otto is #302 in the 2025 list of billionaires worldwide.
Early Career
Born in July 1967 in Hamburg, Alexander Otto was raised within the framework of one of Germany’s most successful entrepreneurial families. Planning to follow in his father’s footsteps and join ECE, Alexander pursued a global education that shaped his cosmopolitan business outlook. After completing his schooling at St. Clare’s in Oxford, he moved to the United States to attend Harvard University, from which he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1990.
Business and Strategic Evolution
Under Alexander Otto’s direction, the ECE Group has expanded its footprint significantly. According to the company’s official history, the firm currently manages approximately 200 shopping centers across 12 countries, with a market value volume under management exceeding €30 billion. Since Otto’s appointment, the company has developed sustainability practices, international recognition, and multiple cutting-edge projects. Among them is the “Digital Mall” project, an initiative that bridges the gap between online browsing and physical shopping, ensuring that brick-and-mortar destinations remain relevant in the digital age.
Alexander’s business impact extends far beyond retail. Under the specialized divisions ECE Marketplaces and ECE Work & Live, Otto has diversified the group’s portfolio into high-end residential districts and modern office complexes. One of his most notable strategic pivots was the increased focus on logistics centers and hotel developments, with ECE now ranking as one of the largest hotel developers in Germany.
Otto is recognized as one of the world’s most successful real estate investors. This is evident by his role as a Life Trustee of the Urban Land Institute (ULI). His business philosophy remains rooted in values of integrity and reliability, prioritizing stable, valuable developments that benefit both the family-owned company and the broader urban communities they serve.
Philanthropy
His commitment to urban quality is also reflected in his philanthropic work. He founded the “Lebendige Stadt” (Vibrant City) Foundation, which works to enhance the aesthetic and functional quality of European cities through innovative lighting, green spaces, and cultural integration. In addition, Otto founded the Sportstiftung foundation, advancing sports in Hamburg for youth and people with disabilities.
Lastly, Alexander Otto and his wife, Dorit, run a Hamburg-based non-profit organization dedicated to fostering sustainable advancements in medicine, culture, and social welfare. The foundation is most recognized for its cultural contributions, such as the €15 million modernization of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, and its rapid response to social crises, including the “Kultur hält zusammen” (Culture Holds Together) fund, which provided €1 million in support to artists during the COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond the arts, the foundation prioritizes public health and humanitarian aid, famously financing innovative medical “translator containers” for refugees that used high-performance technology to bridge language barriers in clinical diagnoses.
