Research Reveals that Double-Story Homes are no Longer the Favorite
The United States Census Bureau made some interesting findings recently when it comes to the housing market. It was discovered that single-story homes are once again becoming the most popular choice. The data reveals that more single-story homes are being constructed than double-story homes and these numbers are growing fast.
A Shifting Trend
Although 2018 still saw more homes that are two or more stories being built, these numbers continue to shrink while the construction of one-story homes is growing. The percentage of new homes constructed with two or more stories decreased by 2% from 2017 when it was 55% to 53% in 2018. Conversely, the percentage of new homes being constructed with only a single story increased by 2% from 45% to 47%. According to the National Association of Home Builders, this growth in one-story homes was most evident in the South.
It Applies to Both New Constructions and Existing Homes
In an independent report released by Redfin Real Estate Brokerage, it was indicated that single-story homes were the most sought-after style of house in real estate sales during 2018. The report also noted that this type of style was more affordable. Furthermore, it was discovered that single-story homes are more popular with older generations. As much as 80% of a group of baby boomers interviewed in a survey by the NAHB stated their preference of a single-story home. The reason behind this preference is that they will be more comfortable growing old in a single-story home. On the other hand, only 35% of the millennials who were interviewed said that they would prefer to own a home that only has one story. Also noted by the NAHB in their Eye on Housing blog is that one-story homes are becoming more popular in both metro and non-metro areas.
